See a gap – think implants

Issued: Thursday, 6 June 2013

Treatments for missing teeth that compromise natural dentition and healthy gums should nowadays be viewed as a last resort, according to the UK’s leading supplier of dental implants.  In its latest campaign, ‘See a gap, think implants’, DENTSPLY Implants urges general practitioners to present the option of dental implants positively to their patients and get involved with providing the final restoration.

Dr Tim Earl of The Lodge Dental Practice, Uckfield, has been restoring dental implants for almost ten years.  He says, “When assessing the clinical situation, the condition of neighbouring teeth must be considered before deciding on the optimum treatment.  In a mouth with little restoration, there should be minimal damage to adjacent teeth.  We are born with individual teeth and individual teeth should be the first choice as replacements where possible.”

In the twenty-first century, dental implants should be the preferred clinical option to replace missing natural teeth.   When some dentists see a gap, they immediately recognise implants as the best solution.  But many general dental practitioners only seriously consider implant treatment after all other clinical options have been exhausted.  Patients who have struggled with gaps, conventional bridges or dentures for years find that implants finally give them the ability to eat, talk and smile with confidence.

Denture wearers can experience bone loss which may alter the look of their face, according to Dr Matthew Holyoak of Woodlands Dental, Lytham St Annes.  Matthew explains, “This can be avoided with the implant-supported full arch bridge.  Another advantage is that the teeth are fixed, which avoids loss of function and discomfort for the patient.”

More cost-effective in the long term

According to the British Dental Health Foundation patient information leaflet on dental implants, "Over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost-effective and satisfactory option.”  Patients are becoming more aware of the benefits, as Dr Mary Green of Richmond House Dental Practice in Chichester has found: “The number of patients asking about dental implants has rocketed.  Nowadays people realise that it is the best long-term investment.”

Providing tooth implant treatment can help strengthen patient relationships and enhance practice reputation.  Dr Louise Henvey of St John’s Road Dental Practice in Edinburgh explains, “To be able to offer restoration of implants in practice has advantages for both the patient and the dental team and it gives the opportunity to become more involved in the treatment planning.”

For the general dental practitioner, restoring straightforward dental implant cases is quick, simple and profitable. Minimal additional training and equipment are needed, and the patient stays with their own dentist for long-term care.

More predictable than restoring a post crown

Matthew Holyoak argues that “Completing a single implant case is like restoring a post crown, only far more predictable.”  He enjoys the convenience of having an experienced local colleague, Dr Gary Hills at the Fylde Coast Dental Implant Centre, who places the implants.  Matthew adds, “This leaves me free to concentrate on the restorative aspects of the case.  I plan the treatment and we work as a team to provide the best outcome for the patient.”

Tim Earl refers his patients to The Implant Centre, Haywards Heath for implant placement.  He says, “Offering dental implants to my patients gives them the full spectrum of treatment options.  This enables me to present a complete, rounded treatment plan.  I maintain overall control, which gives the patient confidence. We work very closely with the surgeons to get the best treatment for the patient.”

With access to information about dental implants greatly increased by the internet, some general practitioners are losing patients by failing to offer implant treatment.  Dr Simon Belford of Alington Dental in Bournemouth explains, “Most of the patients who have come to me through dentists4implants.com feel they have been abandoned by their general practitioner.”

To help dentists get started in implant restoration, DENTSPLY Implants’ ‘R£LAX’ programme offers a comprehensive package of support.  The local events include lectures and hands-on training (worth three hours CPD), and attendees receive a FREE mini prosthetics kit to treat their first case.  For general practitioners who wish to restore implants placed by a local colleague, there are plenty of implant surgical partners around the UK featured on www.dentists4implants.com

Dr Phil Davies of Richmond Dental Surgery in Truro attended a local ‘R£LAX’ event and found it to be a commendable benefit to his patients and an asset to the practice.  He adds, “It opens the door to implant treatment on the premises, and will help to move my practice forward.”

More and more general dentists are discovering that they can share the fruits of the rapidly growing, multi-million pound dental implant business without the need to learn to undertake surgical placement.  Following the advent of DENTSPLY Implants, access to FREE dental implant restoration training has been boosted, with many more local events, additional surgery partners and stronger support around the UK.
