"The back-up I receive from the company is first class. I also think their commitment to postgraduate education, in the quality of the courses they promote, is unrivalled. These surely help other dental surgeons to hugely develop their skills in the field of implant dentistry. Appropriate, researched, structured training is of paramount importance in implant dentistry."

Making dentistry more rewarding

Issued: Friday, 15 March 2013

Eddie MacKenzie of The Dentist talks to Chris Meldrum, managing director of the newly formed Dentsply Implants.

EM. What motivates you to get up in the morning?
CM. My mortgage! No, seriously, I find it really satisfying being able to help make a difference for people with missing teeth. Dental implants can change lives, by enabling patients to eat and speak completely normally once again; to smile, laugh and even kiss with confidence.

Working with clinical and technical partners, Dentsply Implants has the potential to help more people discover that dental implants are the next best thing to getting their natural teeth back. That’s a big opportunity and a major motivation for me personally.

EM. What’s different about working at Dentsply Implants?
CM. The new company combines the strengths of Dentsply Friadent and Astra Tech Dental. It benefits from a comprehensive range of trusted products for every clinical situation; unique initiatives to support practice growth; and unrivalled postgraduate skills development opportunities.  We have terrific people and strong relationships with customers. Delegates who attend our worldclass scientific events say how much they also enjoy the social side of the company.  So it’s also about having fun together.

EM. How are the current economic conditions affecting the dental implant sector?
CM. There has never been a better time for dentists to get involved with dental implants, either placing or simply restoring cases for their own patients. The implant business continues to experience sustained growth, despite adverse UK economic conditions. In fact, Dentsply Implants is growing three to four times faster than the market. Our partners in general practice, specialist clinics and dental laboratories are at the forefront of that expansion.

EM. Where are the additional implant cases coming from?
CM. There are millions of people in the UK with some or all of their teeth missing. However, the annual number of dental implants placed here is relatively low compared with other developed countries. Our experience suggests that substantially more patients are willing to make the necessary investment once they learn more about the benefits of dental implants. We are working with implant dentists and general practitioners to significantly improve patient information about, and access to, this treatment option.

EM. Can the internet be used to give patients better access to implant treatment?
CM. Yes. One of the ways Dentsply Implants is helping its customers to treat more cases is by improving patient access to dental implant treatment. This is being achieved both with the involvement of the patient’s own dentist, as well as directly online through www.dentists4implants.com.  The number of practitioners featured on the directory website is increasing to more than 200 this year. That will make it even easier for people with missing teeth to contact a local dentist to discuss implant treatment.

EM. How can patients’ own general dental practitioners help deliver implant treatment?
CM. More and more general dental practitioners are discovering that restoring implant cases can be good for their practice and enhance long-term patient relationships. Training, support and a mini prosthetics kit are provided free, through the Dentsply Implants ‘R£LAX’ programme.  This initiative is now joined by dentists who use the Astra Tech Implant System.  So, GDPs all over the country will have direct access to more local implant surgical partners and more ‘R£LAX’ events, where they can learn to begin restoring implant cases for their own patients.

EM. Why should established dentists consider getting involved?
CM. It can be very rewarding to permanently restore patients’ natural oral function and appearance.  Introducing dental implants to their practice gives dentists more freedom and offers patients more choice.  We can help practitioners work more effectively and enjoy what they do. The most precious thing we have is time – we often spend too much time doing things we have to do rather than what we want to do. However, we can, and do, mix business with pleasure – it’s about having the right attitude.

EM. What clinical developments are coming along to help implant dentists?
CM. Dentsply Implants enjoys the combined resources of Astra Tech Dental and Dentsply Friadent in research and product development. Our implant systems are backed by extensive scientific documentation from clinical studies. A good example of a recent development is the SmartFix abutment. This enables clinicians to provide edentulous patients with same day teeth, whilst avoiding critical anatomical structures.

EM. What will happen to the company’s postgraduate education programme?
CM. Patient interest in tooth implants is increasing all the time. One way or another, every dentist needs to be able to offer the treatment as part of a comprehensive package of care. Dentsply Implants has an even broader programme of postgraduate training than its predecessor companies. We welcome dental professionals who want to get involved and expand their skills.  The programme is available 24/7 by visiting www.courses4implants.com

EM. How will Dentsply Implants enhance patient care?
CM. Prosthetically, one of the big growth areas is technology for treatment of the edentulous patient.  Atlantis already provides patient-specific CAD/CAM abutments for single tooth gaps, using any of the major implant systems. The next stage of development is the recently introduced individually fabricated, screw-retained suprastructures manufactured using leading edge CAD/CAM technology.

EM.  What does Dentsply Implants offer to new customers?
CM.  A lot! Dentsply Implants is continuing to supply and further develop all of its existing implant systems: Ankylos, the Astra Tech Implant System and XiVE. Our overriding mission is to become the best at the things that matter to dental professionals who are involved with implantology. The new company is already attracting interest from more clinicians and dental technicians who are keen to accelerate the development of their own implant business.

EM. What difference does being part of Dentsply make?
CM. Working within the largest global dental organisation is a big plus. Dentsply International made a huge investment to form the new implant business. Together, we gain new opportunities and increased momentum. We can also work closely with our colleagues in Dentsply to support dental professionals in providing comprehensive oral healthcare to patients.
