Restoring dental implants makes S£NS£

‘R£LAX’ GDP implant restoration campaign goes from strength to strength

Issued: Thursday, 17 February 2011

UK dental patients with missing or failing teeth have better access to implant treatment than ever before, thanks to DENTSPLY Friadent.  Patient consultations can now be arranged direct online via or by referral from their own general dental practitioner.  Increasing numbers of GDPs are discovering that completing the restorative phase of referred dental implant cases makes a great deal of sense, for their practice and for their patients.

Implant treatment can improve clinical outcomes for patients and expand income options for their dentist. Undertaking the restoration phase of the treatment enables general practitioners to profit from the continuing expansion of the implant market without having to learn to place dental implants.  Restoring implants helps dentists improve practice performance and strengthen long-term patient relationships.  More than 400 dentists have begun restoring implants for their patients, as a result of DENTSPLY Friadent’s nationwide campaign.

The experience of Dr Michael Chanoch of Penn Hill Dental Practice, Poole, typifies the transformation: “Since attending the ‘R£LAX’ training event I have felt much more confident about getting involved with dental implants.  I have started carrying out restorations for my own patients and I find the ANKYLOS implant system simple and very easy to use.  I complete the restorative phase at my surgery, meaning less disruption to the patient and more income for my business.  In most cases an implant-supported restoration is unbeatable and the treatment can change patients’ lives.”

DENTSPLY Friadent’s ‘R£LAX’ general practice implant restoration programme is helping to accelerate the development of the sector, by making the treatment option more accessible to patients through their own dentist.  ‘R£LAX’ event attendees discover that restoring dental implants is easy and profitable.  They gain more confidence to speak with authority to their own patients about this treatment option.  Most dentists who attend the training feel completely happy to begin restoring dental implants straightaway.

Dr Julia Shacklock of East Ayton Dental Practice, Scarborough, explains: “The R£LAX event dispelled the mystery and helped me realise how straightforward implant restoration can be.”  Dr Adam Clapp of Finsbury Dental Care, London agrees, “Since the training the barriers have been overcome and the procedure is now a lot more convenient for my patients. Take-up for this treatment option is growing all the time”.

During the past year more than 100 ‘R£LAX’ events have been organised to help train GDPs with little or no previous involvement in implant dentistry to complete the prosthetic stage in straightforward cases.  The campaign is continuing apace during 2011, with restoration training at additional practices around the UK (details from  The ‘R£LAX’ package is provided FREE and includes lectures and hands-on training (worth three hours CPD).  Attendees are provided with a FREE mini prosthetics kit, when they start restoring implants for their patients.

Dr Drew McIntyre of Argyll Smile Dental Care describes the difference that restoring implant cases makes, “Patients appreciate being able to come to their own practice for the latter implant stages.  I’m part of the dental implant process and I get to see the fantastic end results first hand.”  Dr Simon Pomfret, of Shaw, Pomfret and Farrell, Chelmsford concludes, “Restoring implants allows me to offer patients more treatment options, whilst retaining their business.  For patients who can afford the initial outlay, the implant option is more cost-effective than conventional treatment over the long term.”

For patients with missing or failing teeth, dental implants can restore life-like oral appearance, natural function and boost confidence.  Implant supported dental crowns, bridges and dentures look, feel and function just like real teeth.  The result can last a lifetime, when properly looked after.  According the British Dental Health Foundation patient information leaflet on dental implants, "Over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost-effective and satisfactory option.”

The general practitioner has a big influence on patient awareness of this life-changing therapy, according to Chris Meldrum, Managing Director, UK & Ireland: “Whenever dentists see a gap in a patient’s dentition, increasing numbers recognise implants as the optimum solution.  Nowadays, implant treatment is rarely viewed only as a last resort when all other clinical options have been exhausted.  But, even for those remaining patients whose general dentist doesn’t offer implant treatment, that’s no longer the end of the road.”

The website offers a choice of more than 100 implant dentists who can be consulted by patients direct or by referral from their regular dentist.  The site includes an easy-to-use online referral form for dentists and lots of information about dental implant treatment.  There are comments from implant patients, and visitors can get answers from participating dentists to questions about the treatment they need.  A patient of Dr Nigel Jones, Smiles Better, Abergavenny enthuses, “Now I can laugh, smile, have a lot of fun and kiss with confidence.”

Every month thousands of patients are visiting and consulting implant dentists throughout the UK about the treatment they require.  Together with stronger referral relationships between GDPs and implant dentists, DENTSPLY Friadent is improving patient access to this treatment option. These initiatives are helping dentists develop their practices and accelerate the growth of dental implantology in the UK.  The full ‘R£LAX’ calendar and a directory of implant surgery partners are available at
