Dr Philip Friel

BDS BSc (Hons) MFDS RCS (Edin) MRCPS (Glas)

Philip Friel has a degree in Anatomy and a particular interest in dental implantology, including bone grafting, soft tissue surgery and immediate placement/loading. He lectures and mentors on the placement and restoration of dental implants. Dr Friel is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.  He is the current President of the Association of Dental Implantology.

Philip has a strong commitment to continued education and trains with globally recognised pioneers, and experts of advanced cosmetic and implant techniques.  He is a member of the British and American Academies of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the Academy of Osseointegration (USA).  Philip currently works in general, cosmetic and implant dentistry, at his private referral clinic in Glasgow‘s West End. Dr Stephen Jacobs


Stephen qualified from Birmingham University in 1985 and went into general dental practice. He started in implant dentistry in 1991 and since then has devoted hi career to the practice of implant dentistry, he is regarded as one of the foremost implant surgeons in the United Kingdom.

His training was carried out in the UK, USA and Europe and he now lectures extensively on all aspects of dental Implantology throughout the United States, Asia, Continental Europe and the UK.

Stephen runs his implant referral practice in Glasgow, UK, where all aspects of implant and reconstructive dentistry are carried out.

Stephen is a Key Opinion Leader and Ambassador for Dentsply Implants and Osstell. He carries out in practice research, currently working on 3 projects.

Stephen is a Past President of the Association of Dental Implantology UK (ADI) and a committee member and Fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration, and the UK Ambassador for AO. He is a founding Board member of PEERS UK, and is the Past Scientific Chairman of the ADI.

He is on the editorial board of three journals and runs a variety of courses at his practice, including a comprehensive year course for those willing to get started in the field of Implantology, sinus grafting and restorative programs.

Stephen currently mentors several dentists and is experienced with many implant systems.


Professor Gerald W McGarry


A Consultant ENT Surgeon in Glasgow Royal Infirmary since 1995, Gerry specailises in head and neck surgery, endoscopic management of sinonasal tumours and endoscopic anterior skull base surgery.

He is active in clinical research and surgical education in the UK and worldwide.  Gerry has designed and delivered numerous courses including "Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery" (RCSEd).  He has been a member of the ENT SAB of the RCSEd and Chair of the Surgical Specality Group of the RCSEd.

Other positions held includ Lead Cancer Clinician  for WoScan, Head and Neck Cancer Network, Clinical Director for ENT Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS and Team Leader for GMC Performance Procedures.

Gerry has authorised numerous chapters in key textbooks and continues to be active in clinical research.  He is Editor of the key reference text in Rhinology, Scott-Brown's Otorhinolarymgology 8th Ed.  In his spare time he climbs big mountains.

Target Audience

General dental practitioners who are experienced in straightforward dental implant surgery and wish to progress to incorporating sinus work into their skillset.

Course Summary

A comprehensive programme including anatomy,  physiology,  cadaveric dissection
– with implant and graft placement. This course benefits from input from two experienced general dental practitioners as well as a consultant ENT surgeon.
